Aging Skin and Procedures that Help

By Stina Delance

Taking certain preventative measures and taking good care of your health will serve you well. The effects of aging are inevitable, but with some good care you can help to prolong your youthful skin. Treatments like BOTOX, facelift, chemical peel, and Photofacial can help keep your skin young, but they are not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle. Taking good care of your skin is something you should always do before, during, and after your cosmetic treatment.

Carefully monitoring the amount of sun that we are exposed to is the biggest way we can make the most difference when we are trying to avoid aging skin. Understand that both the sun and tanning salons expose you to harmful ultraviolet (UV) light, which causes the bulk of damage for most people with aging skin. Sunscreen is important to apply to the skin because we may not notice the damage that the sun does to our skin, as it accumulates over time slowly.

Keeping the skin hydrated will make it appear less aged and more healthful. Often the best daily approach is to use a good facial moisturizer to help hydrate the outer layers of the skin.

The way we eat shows up in our skin. Essential fatty acids are required, such as omega 3 and omega 6, to maintain optimal skin function and appearance. These can be gained from fish, flax seed oil, or walnuts and other foods. However, there is no need to do this in excess and your current diet probably contains all of the essential oils your skin needs. Using whole wheat grains is a healthier choice than white bread options that are available. Be sure to have plenty of vegetables and fruits, low-far dairy products, and look for non-saturated fat options. Doctors and dietitians have good advice, so follow that and make good choices based on education. Your skin will respond well to a proper diet, and aging will be slowed down, and you will feel better in general.

Natural enzymes are present in skin, and they work to repair damage that skin takes. Although they can't stop our skin from aging, they keep it healthier for much longer by fixing damaged skin every day. Tobacco products such as cigarettes contain toxins and free radicals that kill these helpful enzymes, and will also destroy collagen and elastin which keep skin more tight and youthful looking. Those who choose to smoke cigarettes should take note that aging is sped up with each cigarette smoked. Make sure you do your best to stop smoking. Skin will stop aging as quickly, and there are many other health benefits that will result from this.

Acne is something that affects different people in different amounts. No one likes the scars that are sometimes the result of acne breakouts. Consult a dermatologist to help get your acne under control. This will help to keep your skin young and prevent acne pits and scars from developing. A physician will work with a patient to find the acne treatment that will benefit them the most. And a cosmetic surgeon may be able to help you with a chemical peel to treat acne if you are a good candidate for this safe procedure.
