By Matthew Richmond

We all know that eating right and exercising properly can lead to good nutrition, but there's a lot of other information that you may be missing if you think that's all there is to looking and feeling your absolute best. Follow this article closely and learn some finer points about nutrition that you may be missing.

Use low-fat yogurt as a healthy alternative to chip dip. Chip dips are notoriously high in fat and calories. Low fat yogurt makes a great healthy substitute. It is thick enough to cover the chips and it packs a punch in terms of taste. Use it just like you would any other dip.

Don't be confused about carbs. Low-carb diets are very popular nowadays, but eliminating carbs from your nutrition plan is not a good idea. A person needs a certain amount of carbohydrates on a daily basis to keep the mind and body in tip-top condition. Complex carbohydrates such as fiber and whole grains will help to keep you feeling fuller longer, so you won't be constantly reaching for unhealthy snacks.

You should try to eat less salty foods to balance out your nutrition and lower sodium levels in your body. By avoiding or eating smaller amounts of foods with high-salt content such as chips, pretzels, pre-packaged noodles, or other foods with large amounts of preservatives, you could receive positive nutritional benefits.

Instead of bemoaning the fact that your favorite foods are high in fat or sugar, start focusing on the healthy foods you do like. This way you'll be happier about eating in a health-conscious way, and you might be surprised at the number of foods that are healthy that you already like.

Make sure when you are buying bread that you purchase something that says "whole wheat" and not simply "seven grain" or otherwise. Whole wheat bread is great for you because it is a complex carbohydrate, meaning your body expends energy to process it and it doesn't rapidly get absorbed by the bloodstream. However, unless bread packaging specifically says "whole wheat," you may not be choosing the right bread.

If you are going to eat food with high calorie or sugar content, try to eat it early in the day when your metabolic rate is moving at a faster pace. You are more likely to end up with excess calories that get stored as fat if you eat such foods later in the day when your metabolism is slower.

Limit your intake of frozen meals if you're watching your sodium intake. The salt content in most frozen meals is ridiculous. Some even contain an entire day's worth of salt. They may be convenient, but are you willing to risk your health over spending a few extra minutes in the kitchen?

Follow the Mediterranean diet plan. This diet is typically followed by people who live in Greece, Spain, France and Italy. It mainly consists of fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, dairy products. wholemeal pasta and olive oil. Meat is only consumed occasionally. It isn't really a diet, rather a lifestyle. Eat good food in moderation, and know what to avoid. Any artificial products are a no-no. Not only will you lose weight, you will feel much healthier.

Knowing the difference between good and bad carbs is crucial. Good carbs are those that do not drastically raise your insulin levels. Instead, they keep your blood sugar even for a long period of time. These foods include rice, sweet potatoes, and vegetables. Bad carbs are those that drastically increase insulin levels and spike blood sugar at a level that is way too high. Foods that are bad carbs include sweets and white bread.

With the information in this article, you should start feeling more positive, on ways you can become successful with practicing a healthy nutritious diet. Remember that this knowledge is only going to be good if you actually apply it. Try to the best of your ability to apply what you have learned today and success should follow.
