Thinking Of Using Soy For Hot Flashes

By Laura McFadden

Many females, when going through stages of menopause, will visit their family doctor and seek help to alleviate some of the symptoms. In many instances, the doctor will prescribe a course of drugs designed to reduce night sweats and other symptoms. A large number of women are now looking into more natural solutions and if you are thinking of using soy for hot flashes there are a few important things to be considered beforehand.

Many types of drug can be prescribed by physicians to help women who may be suffering menopausal discomfort. The most widely used is HRT and this has proved successful for a large numbers of people. Many women have reported that they have experienced some unpleasant side effects after taking HRT for long periods of time and decide to look at natural remedies to help them.

Soy milk is now a popular method of treatment for a lot of women and they drink it regularly to help with the uncomfortable symptoms that they experience. Because the milk is high in estrogens, it helps to stop the human body producing the chemical that leads to hot flashes. Although the professional medical authorities have not yet endorsed its use, many doctors are now recommending it as an alternative to patients, and research is still ongoing.

Some of the medical reports investigating the use of soy based products have produced mixed opinions and findings and things are not clear. A number of patients have reported some digestive problems and other health problems after regularly using it. There is still a lot of research and testing to be done, and until then, the official facts and findings are unavailable.

Other medical reports that have been published say that taking soy on a regular basis can increase the risks of cancer. Women who have previously suffered from breast cancer have been advised not to take soy due to the estrogens that it contains. Other studies have claimed that it prevents cancer so these results are conflicting at the moment. If you have ever been diagnosed with cancer it is advisable to consult a doctor before you include these products in your diet.

If you choose to try soy to help there are many other ways to take it than drinking milk. Milk is the most popular way but many people also use food made with it including burgers, snack bars and sausages. Soy beans can also be used when cooking and many vegetarian foods also contain it and these can be found in most supermarkets.

When using alternative medicines, some care is needed and some you need to take a few things into account. If you start to feel worse or any other symptoms develop you should stop using it and try an alternative. If the soy seems to be working and you feel that it is beneficial you can continue to use it as long as good health is maintained.

Prior to using any treatment you should ask the advice of your family physician. A healthy diet and taking regular exercise is also recommended to help you to respond to your treatments better. There is a lot of information to be found online regarding soy, and it is a good idea to read as much of this as you can.
