Optometry is a noble profession that concentrates treatment for eye problems like vision processing for most individuals. First thing is to finish your high school and obtained a high school diploma. During your high school days, you need to focus on the level of skills you have and the interest in several areas of science such as chemistry, physiology and biology. Your performance in these courses make you determine if you really want a scientific career or not.

Every optometry school requires the students to obtain coursework in the area of chemistry, physics, biology, English and mathematics. You first talk to the school counselor about the best programs you would apply and the requirements for the programs.

Although not all programs, require you to finish college before enrolling, but you still need to complete three years of a four year program before you will be admitted. You have to complete first your degree in bachelors before obtaining the degree.

You should take the test for admission or the so called OAT. Most students are required to take the exam in the best and accredited institution. If you have a great performance of your test, there is a big chance to enter and accepted by the school. You must study all the guides for the OAT about the requirements, rules of conduct, test regulations and testing procedures. Once you have already learned the guidelines, you can immediately enroll for the exam. You have also the choice to take an OAT preparatory program to develop your overall performance.

You need to complete the course for Doctor of Optometry. This course will take 4 years before completing the whole program in an accredited institution. The cost of the programs depend on your chosen school. You also need to consider a completion of a postgraduate residency program.

These residency programs allow most of the optometrists to obtain practice working in their field. This is under the guidance of the professionals and to develop more their skills. Residency programs are a noble practice and helpful, especially there are individuals in the overall population who ware underprivileged.

Most of the states are requiring each individual in the profession to have a license. You must complete first your doctor of optometry course before gaining a license. You need to take several exams which includes both oral and written tests. Some states would require you in taking additional exams before obtaining a license. In renewing your license, you should learn some rules within your state to keep your license active.
