Upper Klamath Lake, also called Klamath Lake, is a freshwater lake located in Oregon. The large, shallow body of water is located east of Cascade Range in the south-central portion of the state. Its surface area makes it the largest body of fresh water in Oregon. Organic Klamath blue green alge has become a popular topic among those interested in natural health.

Aphonizomenon flos-aquae is the technical name for the algae that the lake produces. It is much like spirulina and chlorella, although there are many differences worth noting. A lot of folks talk about the benefits that come with utilizing this algae.

Although this is grown in other places, there is not any like that found in this lake. That which is found in other parts of the world is considered highly toxic. For one reason or anything, the Klamath Lake algae is believed to be 100 percent pure and toxin free. This is why people have chosen to ingest it for its many benefits. Furthermore, there is no shortage of the substance in this area.

It is estimated that thousands of kilograms are harvested from the lake every year. Most of it is sourced out to clients that deal in supplements. In summer months, the growth is so robust that the lake itself turns green in color. The native fish of the lake usually die off because the algae sucks oxygen from the water.

There is a lot of information out there about the potentially powerful health benefits of this substance. However, there is not much solid evidence to support those claims. This algae is believed to suppress tumors, enhance immune systems and serve as a plant source of the B12 vitamin. Like all other algaes, it has high amounts of iron, phytonutrients and protein.

This substance has a large amount of phycocyanin. In fact, it has more of this compound that any other food source in the world. This is a naturally occurring antioxidant that forms in cyanobacteria. It can reduce oxidative stress, as well as inflammation present in the body. This compound is actually one of the reasons that spirulina is recognized as a superfood. While spirulina has approximately five percent of phycocyanin, Klamath Lake algae carries about 15 percent.

Because there is no scientific evidence that proves the benefits of this algae, it should be taken with caution. Less than a handful of studies have been done on this substance and so there are many skeptics. Consider speaking with a health professional about your health status and interest in this algae before taking any supplements. This might not be effective for all people and so individuals who try it out should remain cautious and start slow.

Many health companies offer this in the form of supplements, be it powder or pills. It might be the algae only or other natural substances added as well. The cost for these products will vary, but this is not as widely available or affordable as most other health supplements. Make sure to follow instructions and only buy goods from trusted sources.
